The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. — A Legend.
This video captures one of his last public appearances at the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Being in the room that day was powerful. You could feel the weight of history, the reverence, and the impact he has had on generations.

I had the honor of documenting that moment — and now it carries even deeper meaning. This wasn’t just coverage. It was legacy unfolding in real time.

Civil Rights Icon Rev. Jesse Jackson Dies at 84 — A Life That Shaped America
Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., one of the most influential figures in the modern civil rights movement, has died at the age of 84. His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, surrounded by loved ones.
Jackson’s life was a testament to courage, conviction, and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in America. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, he rose from humble beginnings and became a renowned civil rights leader, Baptist minister, two-time presidential candidate, and a tireless advocate for the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world.
A Life Dedicated to Justice
Jackson first gained national prominence as an organizer alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the peak of the civil rights movement. After King’s assassination, Jackson continued to push forward the struggle for equality, leading demonstrations, organizing voter registration drives, and advocating for economic as well as social justice.
He founded Operation PUSH and later the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, organizations that expanded his fight into corporate boardrooms, ballot boxes, and communities nationwide. Jackson also became the first African American to gain serious traction as a U.S. presidential contender, running in the Democratic primaries in 1984 and 1988 — achievements that helped pave the way for future leaders.
His voice, often electrifying and deeply rooted in the traditions of the Black church, became a rallying call for millions who sought dignity, inclusion, and rights long denied. Jackson famously reminded people, “I am Somebody,” a phrase that became synonymous with his message of self-worth and collective empowerment.
Remembering the Servant Leader
In the statement announcing his death, the Jackson family described him as a “servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world.” They urged others to continue the fight for justice, equality, and love — values that defined his life’s work.
Throughout his lifetime, Jackson influenced not only American politics but global humanitarian efforts, from negotiating the release of prisoners abroad to advocating for civil rights in international forums.
A Personal Reflection From Behind the Lens
For MAWH Productions, capturing Rev. Jackson was more than an assignment — it was a moment that transcended photography.
“I will never forget capturing photographs of Rev. Jesse Jackson at the Progressive National Baptist Convention,” says Landon Brooks of MAWH Productions. “Seeing him in that space — the impact he had on the audience, the energy, the reverence — it reminded me why I do this work. I’m not just taking pictures; I’m preserving history. His legacy is woven into every frame.”
That moment was a reminder that legacy doesn’t only live in speeches or headlines — it lives in the moments we preserve, the images we carry forward, and the stories we continue to tell.
Legacy and Impact
Jackson’s passing comes during Black History Month, a poignant reminder of his role in shaping the ongoing narrative of civil rights in America. He leaves behind a legacy that spans decades, movements, and countless lives he inspired — from grassroots activists to political leaders.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Jackson, his children, and grandchildren — but his influence will continue to be felt in every corner where justice and equality are pursued.
Though he has passed, his legacy will continue to inspire leaders, activists, and dreamers for years to come.
Rest well, sir. Your work was not in vain.
