The Nest Bar and Grill

Updated: Nov 10, 2022

The Best in Southern Comfort Food

What sets The Nest apart from your typical bar and grill is the menu. While most bar and grills rely on an American style menu made up of various types of burgers, sandwiches, wings, fries, etc., The Nest Bar and Grill offers all kinds of Southern favorites not only on its regular menu–they offer daily Meat-and-2 Hot Bar specials from 11am-6pm. The Hot Bar, served table-side, typically features a choice between meats like fried or baked chicken or country fried steak smothered in white or brown gravy, with special meats on certain days:

  • Mondays–Fried Pork Chops

  • Tuesdays–Meatloaf

  • Thursdays–Turkey Wings

  • Fridays–Fried Catfish/Whiting; Fried Liver or Grizzard

  • Sundays–Fried or Baked Chicken, Country Fried Steak only

The Hot Bar side items include favorites like macaroni & cheese, lima beans, green beans, cabbage, mashed potatoes & gravy, collard greens, yams, & more. They vary a bit depending on the day you choose, but all meals include your choice of homemade cornbread or a roll.

Regular menu items feature more Southern food like Shrimp & Grits, Fried Green Tomatoes, or Southern Egg Rolls, while you can also opt for typical bar food like burgers, sandwiches, wings, chicken fingers, and more.

And from their bar, they serve all types of draft and bottled beers, signature drinks, and special $5 drinks during their Happy Hour from 5-8pm: Rum Punch, Watermelon Martini, Rainbow Shots, Margarita, Long Island, The Nest Tea, and Blue MF.

Gail Veal, the owner of The Nest, opened the restaurant because she loves Southern cooking, adding, “It’s food that Southern folks like to eat.” Her food is a combination of old family recipes as well as her own. While it’s not a family-owned business, per se, her family has supported her in her dream and been involved behind the scenes in bringing it to a reality. She chose the name “The Nest” by combining the mascots of JSU (the Gamecocks) and Jacksonville High School (the Eagles). Their standout logo echoes the idea, featuring the heads of an eagle and rooster.

The recent Grand Opening of the restaurant was July 11th, but Gail has many plans in the works as their vision evolves. They’re set to start karaoke on Tuesday evenings from 7-11pm in mid-August, and in the future will host tournaments for corn hole, darts, and poker. She also wants to see live music be a part of their offerings.

While Gail admitted they have had a few kinks to iron out since they opened, the restaurant has been a success overall. “It’s been going extremely well. We’ve been truly blessed, and we are truly grateful.”

The Nest Bar and Grill can be found at 8896 McClellan Blvd, Anniston, AL. Their hours of operation are Sunday thru Tuesday 11am-11pm, and Thursday thru Saturday 11am-2am.
